Star Alliance says Gold members can use over 1,000 airport lounges worldwide when they fly with any Star Alliance member airline, and that some restrictions apply (Star Alliance Gold benefits). Baggage and priority
Star Alliance Gold lists an extra 20 kg (44 lb) or one additional piece of luggage, depending on the airline's baggage policy and subject to the member carrier's fare conditions (Star Alliance). oneworld Sapphire lists 15 kg on top of the ticketed Economy Class allowance under the weight system, or one extra bag of up to 23 kg under the piece system (oneworld). Check the operating airline before assuming either applies. Both list priority check-in, boarding and baggage services, but airport and carrier delivery can differ: oneworld notes that priority baggage handling is not currently available on flights operated by British Airways.
Network size is not the decision
Member counts change. Use current official rosters and test your actual routes, operating carriers and lounges rather than choosing on the number of member airlines alone.
Which should you choose?
Choose the member-airline programme that fits your home airport, normal fares and attainable qualification. If evaluating a seller service, require the exact underlying programme and tier. A generic “Star Alliance Gold” or “oneworld Sapphire” product description does not establish who issues the status or whether a benefit will be recognised.
