How do Global Premier Upgrades (GPUs) work?

GPUs are upgrade certificates that can be applied to United-operated long-haul international itineraries. When a GPU is applied to a booking, United confirms the upgrade at a specified pre-departure window (typically 24 hours before departure for 1K members). Upgrades are into the next higher cabin — economy to business, or business to first where available. GPUs must be used on qualifying United-operated routes.

Does Star Alliance Gold work on all 25 member airlines?

Yes. United Premier 1K carries Star Alliance Gold recognition that is applied on all 25 Star Alliance member airlines, including Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, ANA, Air Canada, Turkish, and SWISS. You present your MileagePlus number when booking any Star Alliance flight and Gold benefits apply.

Can I use Economy Plus for companions?

Yes. Premier 1K members receive complimentary Economy Plus for up to 8 companions travelling on the same booking. All companions on the same PNR (booking reference) receive Economy Plus at no charge — applicable on United-operated flights.

Is Premier 1K eligible for United Club access on partner airlines?

Star Alliance Gold grants access to partner airline Star Alliance Gold lounges when flying on qualifying itineraries. United Club specifically requires either a United Club membership, a United flight in a qualifying premium cabin, or a United credit card entitlement — Premier 1K alone without a United Club membership does not guarantee United Club access on non-United-operated Star Alliance flights.

Can I apply for the 120-day extension or is it automatic?

The 120-day grant is a fixed-term status period. Native re-qualification (100,000 PQP + 4 PQF per year) is the only route to extending beyond 120 days. Contact us if you want to discuss options for extended coverage.
